Highlights of Police Reserve’s 2014 :
Here are the reasons that you continue to support the Police Reserve Association and reasons that you should encourage your friends and colleagues to join us in supporting the NYPD. Our recognition, visibility, and reputation among both with the Executive Corps and with the rank and file of the NYPD continue to grow as we engage in important events and programs for the men and women of the NYPD.
Fraternal Day -During every new recruit class we coordinate and work closely with the presidents of NYPD’s religious, fraternal, and line organizations to present Fraternal Day at the Police Academy. This event is designed to promote brotherhood, fellowship, AND to inspire the recruits to join those organizations.
We are an integral part of this program and speak directly to the recruits letting them know about our efforts. We provide each recruit with a booklet that highlights the activities and mission of each organization and that has a full cover page describing the PRA’s mission, history, and our good works on the Department’s behalf.
Family Day - We also sponsor, appear at, and provide lunch for the recruits and their families at the Academy’s family day event. This event is a great showplace for the department’s specialized units that provides a “day in the life” experience for the family of a recruit to see what life is like for members of the department. Again, our high visibility at this event raises the level of awareness about the PRA among all of those in attendance including the Police Commissioner and the top brass of the Department.
Scholarships - Nothing does more to demonstrate the PRA’s dedication to the members of the Department then our annual scholarship program for the children of NYPD cops and for active uniformed members. this year we drew 145 young, college-bound cops’ kids to our merit-based exam where many of them have a chance for our scholarship as well as one from one of the many Department affiliated, fraternal or religious organizations .
We also give graduate and post-graduate scholarships to officers and detectives that generate tremendous good will for our members.
NYPD’s Law Enforcement Explorer Program - we provide funding for the this program is for young people between the ages of 14-20. They are taught what the life of a police officer is all about, they are taught lessons of good citizenship and they provide community service. They are uniformed and many go on to become police officers. As future NYPD personnel we want them to be aware of our good works.
Exemplary Service Recognition – We continue to honor units within the NYPD for exemplary service.
Police Memorial Week - We provide buses to Albany and Washington DC for police memorial week each May. This gesture on your behalf enables many members of the NYPD to participate in ceremonies honoring those who sacrificed their lives on behalf of all of us.
Catastrophe Resilience Program - when asked by the NYPD’s line organizations we provide support for members who are suffering catastrophic illness either do to 911 or other unfortunate circumstances. This assistance, offered on behalf of our members in times of need is greatly appreciated.
We are part of the Combined Municipal Campaign and now the Combined Federal Campaign.
We are approved on all 20 standards by the New York Philanthropic Better Business Bureau.
We have provided competitive T-shirts to the police academy for the recruits. This project encourages recruits to try harder at their tasks.
As we move forward we would encourage our members and supporters to include us in the financial planning. Bequests and endowments could be a wonderful source of revenue for Police Reserve to continue the programs we foster and a wonderful way to enable a tax deductible means for our members and friends.
We are approaching our 100th year...our organization began in 1918 as the American Homeland Organization. We have evolved over the years into a support agency for the NYPD.
We promote excellence and ethical performance in all of the projects we engage in.
